CVSD is actively engaging our community to develop a Portrait of a CVSD Graduate—a collective vision that articulates our aspirations for the future of every student in our district.

Together, we will explore the following:

What are the hopes, dreams and aspirations that our Central Valley community has for our youth?
What are the skills and mindsets that our children need to be successful in this rapidly changing, complex world?
What are the implications of the learning experiences that we provide for every student?

Why a Portrait of a CVSD Graduate (Learner)?

A portrait is a collective vision that articulates our community’s aspirations for all our students.
As educational leaders, it is important to ask:
- What are the hopes, aspirations and dreams that our community has for our youth?
- What are the skills and mindsets that our children need to be successful in this rapidly changing, complex world?
- What are the implications of the learning experiences that we provide for every student?
The portrait is the first step in framing a defined vision for our school system. Once we create our portrait, the exciting work of implementing this vision begins.
Now more than ever, learning experiences must not only provide for rich academic content, but also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and other life skills our youth need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.
School systems across the country have engaged their community in developing a portrait. Every portrait is unique, reflecting the shared vision of their community.

Who will develop our Portrait of a CVSD Graduate (Learner)?

Our district is strengthened when our community is engaged in shaping the future direction of our educational system.
We are actively engaging the larger community in developing our portrait by inviting groups with varying perspectives to join our Portrait Committee.
We want our portrait to be locally developed, but globally positioned, and will use a collaborative design process to welcome as many voices as possible and elicit ongoing input as we co-design our portrait.
Throughout our community, we have varied perspectives, but we have a shared aspiration that all students have an educational experience that prepares them to be lifelong learners and contributors—today and tomorrow.

How will we develop our Portrait of a CVSD Graduate (Learner)?

Our timeline involves three in-person Portrait Committee meetings where stakeholders can actively participate (March 31, April 22 and May 19).
We will share progress along the way, as well as invite our community to share input before we finalize the portrait.
Throughout the meetings, the Portrait Committee will:
- Examine how the world has changed and its implications for our students.
- Discuss the life skills students need to thrive today and tomorrow.
- Identify and consider life skills that should be part of a shared, local vision for our district.
- Ideate on how to launch the portrait to our Central Valley community.
- Discuss how to make our portrait a reality for every student.
