Screening for 2nd Grade

This fall, all 2nd-grade students will take the CogAT Screener as part of the CVSD’s Highly Capable identification process.

What is the CogAT?

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) measures how students think, solve problems, and use reasoning skills. It includes activities that assess verbal, math-related, and nonverbal reasoning.

Unlike a typical classroom test, the CogAT does not measure what students have learned in a specific subject. Students do not need to study or prepare for the test.

When will students take the screener?

November 2–20, 2026
Each elementary school will schedule its own testing dates within this window. Check your school and teacher newsletters for the specific date your child will take the screener.

Does my child need a referral?

No. All 2nd grade students are included in the district’s universal screening process. Families do not need to submit a referral or sign up their child.

Can I opt my child out?

Yes. Families may choose not to have their child participate in the CogAT Screener.

If you would like to opt your child out, please contact your child’s school before the scheduled testing date.

No action is needed if you want your child to participate.

What happens after the screener?

After screening, the district will review student results. Some students may be selected for additional CogAT testing in January as part of the Highly Capable identification process.

Families will be notified if their child is selected for additional testing. They will also receive information about results and next steps.

Universal screening gives all 2nd grade students an opportunity to be considered for Highly Capable services.

How can I help my child prepare?

Students do not need to study for the CogAT. You can help your child feel ready by encouraging them to:
Get a good night's sleep.
Eat breakfast.
Do their best!
