Hear how our custodians and nurses are creating a safe and healthy environment for our students.

George Berryman, Head Custodian of Progress Elementary, says, "I think being part of the essential staff to help kids get back in to school means a lot to me. You know I have three kids of my own--they absolutely love going to school. We are doing our best to get rid of the germs and make sure that anything that is touched is cleaned again and again and again. Anything I can do to help is what I want to do--whatever it takes."
William Bronsch, Head Custodian of Ponderosa Elementary, adds, "Our custodial staff has played an important part and a critical part in sanitizing our school; keeping classrooms and the hallways safe."
Stephanie Lilljestrand, School Nurse, supplements, "Our nursing team is phenomenal! They have 12 certificated school nurses that are covering 28 buildings in our district. I get to be part of that and hopefully be that one person that could make a big difference for somebody. It's nice to be part of something that you know is benefitting the community and helping the kids have that teaching and social piece to their life back a little bit."

CVSD Career & Technical Education

Here is the story of just two of our outstanding CVSD CTE teachers that give our students career and technical skills that they can use for a lifetime.

Joe McCollum teaches the biomedical science CTE & Project Lead the Way courses at University High School. He explains, "We don't just stand up there and lecture. We're throwing out a question or a problem that they're going to try to solve. Then they're working either independently or in groups to solve that problem and come up with the answers themselves. On day one, I'm giving them a heart and saying, 'tell me how this works?'"
"We're doing a lot of the anatomy on the computer. So we've got access to these pretty cool things to where they're 3-D models of human bodies. That is been a really cool tool and resource for the students to be able to use at home."
"The biomedical course do use a lot of equipment. Without the community support, there would be now way the ability to have that technology or even the support to run that type of program."
Mike Conklin teaches computer science CTE courses at University High School. He explains, "Even if it's just as minimal as just a Zoom call, which has become a huge thing, computer science is used in every aspect of life. In my computer science classes, I never hear: 'When are we going to use this?' Once you get the kind of basics of computer science, the thinking, you can really bounce around from language to language."
"We have students that I've had in math class that have gone into programming and work at Amazon and Google. I don't want students to just go into computer science ... I want you to go major in biology, major in agriculture, major in music, and then use computer science as a tool in that field."

CVSD School Safety
Featured
We are very grateful for community support allowing us to continue the great work that we are doing as a security team. Not only to provide a safe environment for our students and our families, but also with this pandemic that we are all facing with the ability to do the work necessary to make sure everyone is being safe for when we get back to in-person learning.

If our kids are not feeling safe and comfortable, then it's going to be difficult for them to learn. The campus resource officer's role has changed quite a bit with the pandemic. Right now there are some students in school -- but not all of the buildings are full yet -- and so what we have them doing is a lot of the community outreach. Whether its transporting a student or getting something to a family that is unable to come to our building---whatever it takes to get that family what they need. They delivered more than 1,800 Chromebook devices to family's doorsteps this spring for those that needed them for virtual learning.
This is a challenging time for all of us and for them to be able to pivot their mindset from what they are normally doing to meeting the needs of the district that we are facing today is greatly appreciated and we really can't do that without our community support.
