School Closure Update
UPDATE: Classes will resume on Tuesday, October 7, following the arrest of a student who left threatening messages on the phone of another University High student over the weekend. Arresting officers reported that the student intended the messages as "prank" calls. School officials have prepared the following letter for parents, to be sent home with students on Tuesday. MONDAY, October 6: All classes are cancelled at University High School today due to specific threats made against students attending the Central Valley school. The decision to cancel classes was made late yesterday by Superintendent Ben Small in order to maintain the safety of students and staff. An active investigation by the Spokane Valley Sheriff Department is underway. All other Central Valley schools are operating normally today as the threats were specific to University High school students only.
All after-school activities and athletics have been cancelled for today. No students or practices are being allowed on campus. However, varsity practices are being held off site as follows:
- Varsity Football @ 2:30 p.m. - Horizon Middle School
- Varsity Girls Soccer @ 2:30 p.m. - Chester Elementary
- Varsity Volleyball @3:30 p.m. - Horizon Middle School
- Cross Country Boys and Girls - meeting off site - check with the coach
All high school games cancelled today will be rescheduled. The Booster Club meeting will be held next Monday, October 13.
At 3:30 p.m. today, Superintendent Small is expected to make a decision regarding the possible resumption of classes for tomorrow. The announcement will be communicated via local media, on this website and also the school district's website at www.cvsd.org.
