About Your Instructor

Robert Behm, Photographer CPP FP
Rob began teaching photography at University high school in the Central Valley School District October of 1993. The program of Instruction that Rob assumed in 1993, has grown from one introductory class of 21 students, to a four level career and technical program which encompasses all aspects of photography and other communication technologies associated with the field of photography.The program at University high school that Rob has developed, continues to be the most requested by students.
Rob’s professional teaching goals have led him to pursue a professional teaching credential from the college of business and industry at Eastern Washington University. His achievements in the classroom include two nominations for the Pathways Pacesetter award. Rob received the Pacesetter Award in 1999 for his outstanding contributions to career and technical education.

In addition to pursuing goals as a professional educator, Rob is the owner and photographer of Valley Studio in Spokane, WA. Rob says, “Working in the community as a professional photographer and business owner keeps me in touch with the public and with what’s going on in the world of work. This is knowledge that I can bring to the classroom and help my students to succeed when they leave high school.” Rob is the immediate past president of the Professional Photographers Of Washington. Rob also represents Washington State on the governing council for the Professional Photographers of America.

In 1999 Rob was asked to help design and implement a new photography lab and classroom for the new University high school. Open in the fall of 2002 this new teaching facility is now a reality and gives students the finest opportunities and technology available to them at the high school level in the state of Washington.

Photography 1

Introductory Course
The Photography I class is available to all Juniors and Seniors attending University High School.

The course is designed to give you knowledge and experience to produce your own photographs using black and white film and paper. Students will learn to use 35mm cameras and lenses.

In addition, the class has a strong emphasis on the principles of using good composition to make
your photographs more appealing and presentation techniques that will get attention for your work.

The course also features an introduction to digital photography and digital applications such as
using Adobe Photoshop.

Photography 2

Intermediate Level
The Photo II course is designed for those who wish to pursue their skills in photography to a more serious level.

The assigned work will include exploration into different careers in photography with projects in Architectural, Photojournalism and Commercial imaging.

This class will give you a basic introduction to studio lighting using the photo-media studio facility at University high school.

Photo 2 will use the skills learned in Photo 1 to help you create more advanced projects and learn professional secrets for using Adobe Photoshop.

Photo II includes field trips and guest speakers to enhance your learning opportunities and give you a well rounded photographic experience!

Photography 3

Advanced Level
The Photo III class is designed for those who are serious about their photography pursuits and are going to consider post secondary education in the photographic arts.

This course concentrates on advanced photographic lessons and professional techniques that will put you at the head of the class when you get to college.

The content will also contain advanced studio techniques and lighting studies that will further enhance your abilities as a creative photographer.

Course completion will articulate to the photography program at Spokane Falls community college.
