Classroom Environment
Academic classes:
Regular on-time attendance, active participation, and good note-taking are essential. The school tardy policy is strictly enforced. 1 hour of ASD is assigned for every tardy after the third. Students must bring and use their class notebook and planner/calendar daily.
All tests and quizzes (except for spelling and vocabulary) are open-note. Tests focus on comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation, not memorization. Students with legitimate, excused absences must make up missed tests and assignments within 5 days -- during student access, lunch, or after school.
Formal and informal writing constitute a major aspect of the course grade and total points. All written work should be original, well-organized, effectively-supported, and follow standard conventions/manuscript form. (See yellow handout.)
Course grade includes a daily entry/participation/ behavior component (usually 15 points per week). Students who are on time to class, on-task and participatory during class, and who behave honestly and respectfully in class, earn full points for the daily entry / participation / behavior grade. Walkmans/Ipods/MP3 Players are not allowed during class time. No cell phone usage or texting allowed during class time. Remember to turn off and stow all electronic devices before you enter the classroom. Failure to do so results in removal of item and significantly lowers the entry / participation / behavior grade. Entry tasks are usually “warm-up” activities or “review” activities (such as oral quick-checks, pre-tests, group practice, etc.) and, therefore, cannot be made up if the student is absent.
Letter grades at University High School generally reflect mastery of skills as defined by state Grade Level Expectations and Essential Academic Learning Requirements.
