Greenacres Middle School

Mission Statement and Principal's Message

Leading adolescents through the process of becoming competent, responsible and respectful contributors to our community is our mission at Greenacres Middle School. As we carry out the goals of the Central Valley Strategic Plan, it is excellence for which we strive.

We promote excellence through teaching and learning. Our goal is for Greenacres students to meet or exceed local and state academic standards. To support all students in reaching that goal, Greenacres has two I-728 staff members to help focus on math and reading instruction as well as student learning. In addition, staff development focuses on improved teaching strategies for math, reading, writing and technology.

We promote excellence through parent, business, and community support and involvement. Our business partner, Tidyman's, sponsors the seventh grade community service project through which students visit residents of Good Samaritan Village. The 6th grade parents work weekly with students to support our spelling program. As a culminating project our 8th grade students participate in a day long Career Fair that included presenters from our business community. PTA is also an integral part of our school as is the School Improvement Team for Education (S.I.T.E.) The council comprised of staff, parents, and business representatives guides our decision making process. Our annual Student-Led Parent Conferences provide an opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to jointly discuss academic goals and focus on students as learners as related by the Portrait of a Central Valley Student.

We promote excellence through our extra- and co-curricular activities. We believe in the value of teamwork and involvement in school activities. We offer after Extended Day Programs as well as Athletics and Intramurals to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a total school program or to access assistance with their homework in meeting district and state standards. We are thankful for the students, staff, parents and businesses who give meaning to our mission of excellence in education.

Spirit Service Club (SSC) is led by Judy Mauro with approximately 30 students joining annually. The major focus of SCC is community service projects. In 2005-06 these students will do Buddy Week, Project Linus, Adopt-A-Family, Pictures with Santa, Gift Wrapping at Valley Center, Val-O-Grams, Guild School Penny Drive, and Teacher Appreciation Week.

High 5 Program is led by Vicki Mularski and includes most students in the school. Any student can join that pledges to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free. The activities for this year include Oct., Game Night, Dec., YMCA Night, Jan., Spokane Chief Hockey Game, March, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and May, Saturday Silverwood Trip.

Vicki Mularski also oversees our "Student of the Month" program. Students are selected monthly by their classroom teachers for a variety of outstanding personal characteristics such as being responsible, respectful, hard workers, or for academics. Each student who is selected receives a picture from Leo's Studio, pizza lunch, a certificate of achievement, and the letter that the teacher wrote nominating the student. The students are then recognized at a bi-monthly breakfast for staff and family.

GMS wants to give a special thank you to our PTA which has been so supportive over the years. Last year the PTA had dances for students and family, led a super fundraiser with the cookie dough sale, had a fantastic 50's dance and donated many many items like a digital camera to journalism, a writing program to special services, sewing machines to consumer science, videos for art and money for our planners to GMS. We love you!

Welcome Everybody (WEB) is led by Dan Owens and Leslie Heffernan. 8th grade student leaders have leadership training in May and August. Each WEB Leader has five 6th grade students they buddy up with during the school year. The leaders and buddies meet for the first time at the 6th grade orientation. The teams then meet monthly to have fun, to get to know each other, and to do some skill building.
