Mission and Principal's Message

Principal's Message

 Dear Parents and Community,

The staff and administration is proud to send the Horizon Community this annual report detailing our schools goals, summary information, and accomplishments. Our commitment to life-long learning and academic excellence is demonstrated through out this review.

This year, the diligent work by our students and staff has been phenomenal. Students have been exposed to various activities that enhance their scores on the states tests. One of thee activities was entitled WASL Olympics. Our WASL math facilitator created a curriculum where students received awards as they met various competencies. In addition, we had WASL problems of the week and daily learning targets. In fact, our math scores soared to number one in the state for schools in our socioeconomic background. Students were very excited about this activity and I am sure their mastery of math concepts will continue to be reflected on their WASL scores. Our sixth graders were also very impressive as they rolled up their sleeves and attacked the ITBS with a vengeance.

The re- configuration to middle school went very smoothly. Longer blocks of teaching time and integration of curriculum has allowed students and teachers to delve deeper in to the subject matter. In addition, we have included a ScanTech program this year which includes robotics, and an aero dynamics module.

As always, the staff and administration believe that respect for self, others, community and property are paramount to student success both in school and when dealing with people in the community. Service learning projects continue to be required by all 8th grade students where opportunities to relate subject matter to the "World of Work" is made possible. In addition, students worked on modeling effective interpersonal skills when dealing with business and the Spokane Valley community.

The staff, students and parents in the Horizon community are very proud of their school and the outstanding programs that are available for students. A collaborative spirit that is modeled by parents, students, staff and administration has been a driving force behind Horizon's pursuit of excellence and academic achievement.
