How do kids learn to read?

These five concepts were identified as critical in a report of the National Reading Panel (2000):

  • Phonemic Awareness: The ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words.
  • Alphabetic Principle: The ability to associate sounds with letters and use these sounds to form words.
  • Fluency with Text: The effortless, automatic ability to read words in connected text.
  • Vocabulary: The ability to understand and use words to acquire and convey meaning.
  • Comprehension: The complex cognitive process involving the interaction between reader and text to convey meaning.

The Big Five

These are the basis for curriculum and instruction in reading.  A student showing difficulty learning to read may have have a deficit in one or more of these areas.  It is my job to assess areas of strength and need in each student I work with and then provide instruction in coordination with the classroom teacher.
