States and Capitals Map Project

You will be completing a map of the United States using the following guidelines. Your map must be done neatly, using your best effort on coloring, handwriting, spelling and overall appearance. Use your Atlas to help you complete your map.

·        Color the original 13 states one color. Group the rest of the states into groups of 10 according to the year they became a state. (You will have a remainder, don’t ignore it.) Color each group a different color. Write the ordinal number for the states 1-50.

·        Write the name of the state in CAPITAL LETTERS and the postal abbreviation. This will need to be in marker. I suggest that you use pencil first and check your spelling before going over it. A fine tip marker or pen will work best.

·        Locate the capital on the map and designate it with a star. Label all of the capitals in lowercase letters. (Except the first letter, of course.)

·        Label the Atlantic and Pacific ocean

·        Label each of the Great Lakes

·        Label the Puget Sound and the Gulf of Mexico

·        Label the Columbia, Snake and Mississippi rivers

·        Make a title for your map

·        Make a key in the bottom left hand corner of the map. Identify Capitals, Rivers. Include a compass rose.

·        Put your name and number on the top right hand corner of the map.
