Pioneer Project - Wagon, Train, or Cabin

Students will be involved in a family project for the next few weeks.  They will either make a traditional wagon, a train car, or a replica of a log cabin.  This project will only effect the students' effort grade in Social Studies since it is a collaborative project.  We have had a long discussion in class regarding authentic materials (no legos or lincoln logs).  These projects need to come in on the Friday before Winter Vacation or earlier, if possible.

Use the following guidelines for the project your child has been assigned:

Wagon:  about the size of a shoe box, items on the inside should reflect what a typical pioneer would take (examples are:  bedding, cooking supplies, etc.).  The wagon needs to have a tongue (the part that connects the wagon to the oxen), a tool box and a water can needs to be attached to the outside, the driver needs a bench to sit on.  People and animals are optional.

Train Car:  about the size of a shoe box, items inside should reflect the type of car it is (passenger, refrigerator, engine, caboose, freight, etc).  The car should have 8 wheels total and an original name should be made up for the train company.

Log Cabin:  NO LARGER THAN 2 SHOE BOXES  Authentic looking materials, items inside should reflect a typical pioneer cabin and include a:  stone stove, bed, table and chairs, and possible bedding or clothing.  The roof of the cabin needs to be removable so the inside contents can be seen.
