Navigators
The Navigators are a team of 3rd and 4th grade students.
As a "crew", we have the daily opportunity
to experience collaborative learning while working with our base camp and also the other teachers and peers in our grade levels.
This year's expeditions:
Healthy Living: This expedition was a study of the body's muscular and respritory systems. We created fitness logs and activity guides to document our learning. We also had guest speakers from EWU Physical Therapy program come in to talk about the benefits of stretching.
Westward Expansion: We learned about the many reasons people made the difficult journey across the United States to live in the west. We also learned about the California Gold Rush through an interactive simulation by taking part in what the gold rush might have been like.
Civil Rights: Students discovered what civil rights meant and what impact the civil rights movement has had on their current lives. They learned about people, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Ruby Bridges, and Rosa Parks; methods of making change such as sit-ins and boycotts; and laws that were made because of these things.
Geology: We are currently learning about geology in the Northwest by looking at the Missoula Floods, rocks and the rock cycle, and fossils. We are discovering how the earth's crust is changed because of these events. Students will be presenting their portfolio of work at the end of the expedition.
Through all our adventures in learning, we strive to demonstrate the Summit School
Character Traits as we continue to grow, learn, and change TOGETHER!
