CREW -- Voyagers

Our Class Schedule: In our voyager day, each child is scheduled for 3 periods (one math, one science, one social studies). Each period lasts 75 minutes. Students pass outside of the classrooms at 10:40, 11:55 and 1:00 on a typical day. Students have crew meeting time from 9:00-9:25 and base camp from 2:20-2:40 in their base camp classrooms. The students attend community time from 12:30-1:00.

C.R.E.W. Meetings: C.R.E.W. meetings are held in all Summit classrooms most days of the week. During these meetings students sit together and greet one another, participate in a reading or initiative, and review the day's agenda. If a reading is shared, students take turns responding to that reading and what it means to them. Initiatives are activities that include a crew-building component and involve strategy. The purpose of C.R.E.W. meetings is to focus on the traits of Compassion, Respect, Enthusiasm, Wonder, and Collaboration.

Fieldwork/Adventure: We are an Expeditionary Learning school. Part of this means that we structure purposeful adventure outings and fieldwork that often asks kids to push themselves to a limit they may not be used to. Proper debriefing and reflecting of these events help the kids to identify areas of both success and failure, and how to manage both. These experiences cannot be made up, or recreated on a work sheet. Therefore it is very important that kids plan on participating in these activities.

Expectations: Voyagers are expected to work with a higher degree of autonomy, to be punctual with assignment deadlines, to be exemplary behavior and leadership models for Summit School’s younger kids, and to do the right thing without being reminded.
