Questions About Word Study

We study expedition vocabulary, spelling patterns, and "no excuse" words over the course of the school year.  Word study lists come home the first school day of each week and word study checks are given each Friday.  If there is going to be a change to this pattern, we will let you know.

Expedition Vocabulary:  When your student brings home a list of expedition vocabulary words, he/she will also have instructions about how to work with them Students will be expected to read and know the meaning of each vocabulary word.  Many times your student will also be expected to spell each word on the list.

Words Their Way (word features and spelling patterns): Each student is given a word list based on his/her developmental level as a writer/speller.  Students focus on a word feature such as word chunks, vowel spelling patterns (different ways to spell the long A sound), suffixes, and affixes.  Students are assessed frequently and their word lists are adjusted according to their needs.

High Frequency Words:  These words are sometimes also known as "sight words."  These are words that students need to memorize and recognize because they are often words that cannot be sounded out.  At times throughout the year your student may be given a word list to practice based on words that he/she often mispells in writing or struggles with when reading.

No Excuse Words: 

These are frequently used words that the Centeral Valley School District  expects students to be able to read and write independantly.
