Special Education Classes
If you are a Central Valley School District certificated employee, or a substitute teacher for our district, please use this online system to choose the certificated clock hour class/es you wish to attend.
Registration Steps:
1. To enroll in a class, click on the ENROLL word on the right side of the chart, depending on which class you want to attend. You will then have to fill in the information for the class. After you have entered your information, hit the ENROLL button at the bottom of the screen.
2. Repeat this process for as many classes as you want to attend.
3. When you have completed enrolling in the classes you want to attend, put in your email address on the right side of the page and hit the "SUBMIT" button, then print. This will give you a list of classes you have signed up to take.
4. To unenroll in a class. Enter you email address in the class confirmation box in the top right. Select the class you want to unenroll in and click the button.
2009-2010 Special Services Secondary Level Professional Development Opportunities
Below is a list of the scheduled professional development opportunities designed to meet the needs of Secondary Special Education Teachers.
Time: 3:30pm – 5:00 pm
Location: North Pines Middle School Library
Clock Hours or hourly pay: A total of 7 clock hours are available when attending all 5 sessions. To earn clock hours, participation in a minimum of 3 hours is necessary. Clock Hours Fee: $5.00. Hourly pay is also offered.

Secondary Special Education: Statewide Assessment and Accommodations
Session is designed to inform you of the recent changes to the statewide assessment system, review accommodations for the next assessment cycle, and explain how to determine which assessment is most appropriate for your students.

All Bridging the Gap classes will be held at the LTC in the Board Room from 3:45pm - 5:45pm.
Clock hours are available for $5.00 per class. You must attend two sessions to qualify for clock hours.

Disabilities Overview
We have students in our classrooms with lots of different disabilities. This presentation is designed for you to leave with an informational resource book focusing on common disabilities. Basic information, characteristics, teaching strategies and accommodations for each disability will be discussed briefly and materials will be shared. (You will want to bring a three ring binder with dividers to organize the printed handouts you will be receiving!)

Autism: Social Perspective Taking and Sensory Integration
Students with autism present with a number of behavioral issues in the classroom that impact their ability to make friends and succeed academically. Social communication breakdowns are often the result of a deficit in perspective taking and/or sensory issues that are difficult to overcome and impact many areas of a student’s life. Learn about issues that affect students with autism at varying levels of the spectrum and how to accommodate these unique learners within the classroom environment.

Social Skills in the Classroom across Different Levels
Last year, we reviewed numerous social skills instructional strategies/tools. This year, grounded in Understanding by Design, this presentation will demonstrate the integration of academic learning standards and social skills instruction. We will share different curriculums, social stories, and visual supports designed to teach appropriate behavior. We will also discuss reinforcement systems, preference assessments, daily behavior report cards, and student specific behavior books. Join us for learning different ways to teach social skills within the academic contents.

Love and Logic

This presentation will focus on simple and practical techniques to help avoid power struggles and diffuse behavioral outbursts in the classroom setting by using a calm and logical approach with students. Elementary Special Education Supplemental Learning Series
Clock hours are available when combining two or more courses. Each course is 1.5 hours in length. A minimum of two courses must be completed for 3 clock hours. A total of 9 clock hours are available if all courses are taken. There is a $5.00 fee for clock hours. Attendees will also receive pay for their attendance.
All workshops are 3:45-5:15 p.m.

Soar To Success: Overview/Updates
A “refresher” on the Soar To Success supplemental reading curriculum will be shared and will outline how to incorporate a Soar To Success group within a special education program, the goals of the curriculum with respect to reading comprehension, and for whom this program is beneficial as a strategic and/or intensive intervention embedded within a continuum of reading support services.

Use of Physical Prompting for Instructional Purposes
This course covers the use of physical prompting for students with significant disabilities. Differentiation from the use of MANDT for de-escalation will also be covered. Participants will learn how to appropriately use levels of prompting to gain participation for academic and non-academic socially based tasks. Participants will also learn and demonstrate how to fade prompts to build independence.

Math Curriculum: Data Collection/Differential Instruction for Special Education Students
Use of differentiation within the special education program and general education classrooms will be covered to include how to build groups by ability, how to track progress to make educational decisions, and how to manage it all! The current district math curriculum, Math Connects, will be used as the springboard for this session, but techniques will also apply to other content areas as well.

Using Assistive Technology within the Resource Room/Self Contained Settings
A review of various types of assistive technology software will be reviewed and will include ways in which this type of technology can assist students within the special education setting to support goals and objectives on the IEP. Participants will also learn how to adapt pieces of the curriculum using components of the assistive technology and how to “build in” an AT program within the special education program. The AT covered will include programs that support written language, as well as programs that help build language skills overall.

Using Assistive Technology/Augmentative Communication within the Self-Contained Classroom
Participants will explore various augmentative communication devices/tools that support communication for students with significant disabilities. Participants will learn how to introduce an augmentative system into the classroom for functional communication at circle, centers, and in the school community.
Participants will also learn the steps toward evaluating how to move to a more complex device to build literacy based on the student’s language skills.
