What is SPACE?
S.P.A.C.E., or Student, Parent Alternative Classroom Experience, is a district-wide program for grade K-5 students. Located at South Pines Elementary School, the program provides an environment where teachers, parents and students work together as an educational team to enhance the learning environment. Parents commit to volunteering a specific number of hours each year to support the program. Families also commit to support fundraising activities for the program.
SPACE Budget and Fundraising
The SPACE Program has a budget separate from the South Pines building budget and the PTSA budget. During the Spring, a budget is developed to present to the parent group for adoption. Annually, an independent accountant reviews the budget. Once the budget is adopted, fundraising takes place to support the budget. SPACE chooses the fundraising activities. For the past several years, SPACE has used SCRIP as a primary fundraiser. SCRIP allows families to purchase gift cards at face value and SPACE receives a percentage of the value of the card. There have been a few joint PTSA/SPACE fundraisers. Both SPACE and PTSA have been using Albertson’s Cards for a fundraiser for the past nine or ten years.
Space Support
SPACE has sponsored a school-wide assembly. They support Math is Cool with money and parent coaches. SPACE has been a driving force behind the Science Fair. The School Support committee has painted outside benches and coordinated charity efforts with the Valley Center. The ink cartridge fund raiser purchased a swing for disabled students. Last year, SPACE provided volunteer training on the new copier and laminator. SPACE volunteers help to support our Book Fair, Carnival, Young Shoppers Club, our Reading Tutor Program, and library inventory. This year we had SPACE parents providing activities to expand the SMART Program. SPACE parents also help to support non-SPACE teachers with copying, laminating and other projects.
