Our mission in Health and Fitness at South Pines is helping students understand and enjoy lifelong Health and Fitness.
In order to accomplish this goal, a few simple rules must be followed. They are:
Think Safety! This includes wearing appropriate shoes every time!
Be nice to and respectful of others
Always give your best effort!
We will be learning, understanding and applying the five components of fitness. These components are cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition.
With the holiday season comes many temptations, such as eating too many unhealthy foods and wanting to stay indoors and not get enough exercise. Enjoy the holidays but make it a point to keep active and “Try” to limit how much food you eat from the top of the food guide pyramid! Remember, grades 3-4-5, continue to work on your December fitness logs. Have a safe, active & happy holiday season!! Mr. Olson

Mission statement:
In Music, we want children to learn to appreciate all the different types of Music. Through listening, creating and performing, this can be accomplished. Since we only meet twice a week, for a total of 60 minutes, our time is limited. Students need to always “try”, to the best of their ability, whether it is tapping out a rhythm, dancing, playing an instrument, or singing in a group. Each grade level will have one performance during the school year, that we would love to share with you!
In the Music Department, we are working on two programs – the third graders will be performing at the Native American Potlatch on Thursday, December 3rd. This will be an evening performance only. The first and second graders are working on their performance of the year on December 17th. Their program is called “This Is Christmas”. We will have our Dress Rehearsal at 2:15 – this is a change – and the Evening Performance will be at 7:00 in our gym. There is limited seating at the evening performance, so you might consider coming at 2:15. The fourth and fifth graders are beginning to work on their program that will include the opening of a time capsule and music spanning the last fifty years. Our Kindergarten students are busy with seasonal songs. – Mrs. Reese

The mission of the Library program is to ensure that students are effective and efficient users of ideas and information.
When it’s cold outside and the days are short, what could be better than snuggling up with a good book? One series that has become very popular is FABLEHAVEN by Brandon Mull. The stories include magic, fantastical creatures, adventure, and action. The books are great for families to read aloud or for better readers to read to themselves. There are currently 4 titles in the series with book 5 coming out this spring. You can find these books in our library or the public library. Enjoy the winter days and a good book! - Ms. Anderson

Another cool way to keep up the reading is to log on to Book Adventure.com. Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. Book Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan Learning. This is a great summer motivator that can be fun and replace the Accelerated Reader program that is only available in school. Give it a try! http://www.bookadventure.org/
Remember to have your students read at least 20 minutes every day!
