District Mission

We will ensure opportunities for successful learning according to each student’s needs and abilities. This will be achieved through a partnership of students, families, school, business, and government by setting high expectations, fostering self-discipline, respect, responsibility, and promoting life-long learning.

School Mission

Staff, students, parents and community will strive to provide a safe and challenging environment which creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and a strong foundation for life-long learning. Through excellence in academics and the use of technology, students will become responsible citizens and complex thinkers.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Community,

The staff and administration is proud to send the Horizon Community this annual report detailing our school's goals, summary information, and accomplishments. Our commitment to life-long learning and academic excellence is demonstrated throughout this review.

This year, the staff at Horizon has worked very diligently on developing teaching strategies that will increase student success on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Teachers have aligned all of their lesson plans to the Essential Learnings and have been accountable by posting monthly activity sheets that meet certain Essential Learning Benchmarks. In addition, students have worked very hard to increase their skills which should be reflected in a positive manner when we receive our test scores in the fall.

Partnerships with area businesses have allowed students to experience "real life" vocations. This year, we have developed a district wide partnership with the Spokane Valley Mall and Horizon signed a formal partnership with Tomlinson Black Valley. Our school to work coordinator promoted service learning projects, the third Annual Career Fair, a Job Shadowing Day, and a variety of field trips that highlighted various career opportunities.

A Journey Around the World was one of our diversity activities. Students in the seventh grade block developed projects that researched various foreign countries. In conjunction with the foreign language department, the staff and students developed an integrated curricular experience. A community international dinner culminated the project. Area restaurants were key to the positive impact of this event.

As always, the staff and administration believe that respect for self, others, community and property are paramount to a student's success both in school and when dealing with people in the community. Student of the Month awards were given to students who modeled the various elements of respect. We believe that students who respect differences in themselves and others will be productive community members in the future.

The staff, students and parents in the Horizon community are very proud of their school and the outstanding programs that are available for students. A collaborative spirit that is modeled by parents, students, staff and administration has been a driving force behind Horizon's pursuit of excellence and academic achievement.
