Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Community:

The staff of Blake Elementary School provides an educational environment that offers optimal learning opportunities for our students.  We have continued our strong emphasis on respect, responsibility and cooperation, while focusing heavily on improving student achievement.  We have utilized the Second Steps Anti-Violence curriculum to teach students a common, respectful language for solving disputes.  Our staff has also participated in continued technology training, enabling them to effectively teach our children those extremely necessary technology skills.  Our teachers have spent countless hours together and individually in the training and implementation of First Steps for reading and writing.  Those efforts have paid great dividends, as we have now exceeded our Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) reading goal for grade 4.  Our goal was to have 59.9% of our students meet the standards by 2001.  Sixty-four percent of our students met the standard.

We have been the very proud recipients of a 21st Century Grant that has allowed us to provide an extensive after school program and summer school for our students.  This grant has also supported parenting classes and special evening programs.

One of the fun highlights of our year is the spring carnival.  It is particularly rewarding because of the tremendous support we receive from our business partner, The Spokane Teacher’s Credit Union, and the many, many other area businesses that donate to the carnival to make it a great success.

The backbone of our school is our families.  We have a great core of parents who spend many hours helping in our school.  But of course a very integral part of our success is because of all those wonderful parents who are not able to come to school and volunteer their time, but they spend time with their children reading, doing homework, working on projects and talking about education in positive ways.  It really does take a whole village to raise a child . . . we have a great village!

Sincerely,

Jean Marczynski

Principal
