CHILD AND STUDENT PROGRAMS

Child Care and the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program

This program provides a range of services and options for young children and their families in the community.  The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) is a state funded comprehensive program for eligible 3 and 4 year olds offering a preschool experience, parent education and involvement opportunities, special education inclusive preschool and child care for children 3 to 11 years of age while parents work, are in job training or college programs.  ECEAP and Inclusive Preschool operate on a school calendar while the child care program operates all  year from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Even Start Program

Even Start is a federal family literacy program to help improve the educational opportunities of families by working with three areas:  early childhood education, adult education, and parenting information.  Parents are supported as the main teachers of their children.  This comprehensive family support program offers resources for child care and transportation, along with:  social service collaboration; availability of an  Individualized and Tailored Care (ITC) collaborative team process; collaborative resources for job readiness, job experience, and employment; and tutoring and mentoring.  Parents must be willing to participate in Adult Education, which includes GED, ABE, high school completion, and/or English as a Second Language (ESL); they must have a child aged Birth to 6 years; with eligible children participating in ECEAP, kindergarten, or grade one.  Even Start operates all year, with corresponding Adult Education and early childhood education or child care.

High School

Barker High strives to provide an environment of mutual respect where students can experience success, improve basic skills, and practice responsible behavior.  We understand that many students who are unable to continue their education in a traditional school setting, still have the desire to obtain a high school diploma.  The classes focus on discussions and related projects, which allows students to interact and determine the pace of their learning. In addition, we have an individualized approach offered via the on campus Nova Net lab.  Barker High School is a fully accredited, full day, five day per week program. Afternoon and evening classes are also available.  The teachers are all certified educators and provide quality curriculum.  The class sizes are significantly smaller, ranging from 15 to 25 students.  Barker High School serves students in grades 9-12.  There is usually a waiting list and to enroll, the student and parent must go through an interview process to determine if the program will meet their educational needs.  Student expectations include: display respect for all age groups on campus (infants, small children, adults, and peers), take responsibility for learning and work habits, maintain academic focus, attend school regularly and participate positively in the learning environment.

4 ACES (Alternative Curriculum & Educational Support)

The 4 ACES program was created for students who are credit deficient, or who could not attend regular high school classes.  Each student meets on a regular basis with a certified teacher to receive learning packets, individual help, assignments and project direction.  The student is expected to work independently away from the school setting between appointments with the teacher.  When students complete the required course work, they are eligible for credits towards graduation.

             DISTRICT LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAMS

ADULT EDUCATION (Institute for Extended Learning)

  General Education Degree Program  (GED)

The General Education Degree Program (GED) is designed to prepare students with basic educational skills needed to obtain a GED.  It includes preparation in the following academic areas:  Writing Skills , Social Studies, Science, Literature, Arts and Mathematics.  These classes prepare students for further course work or employment.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Adults from all over the world study English as their second or third language in the ESL classroom.  Students need additional English proficiency in order to acquire and maintain employment.  Some have been here as few as 5 days or as long as 5 years.  Their talents and expertise vary from laborers, engineers, scientists, educators, and nurses to mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers.  They also study and prepare for the citizenship exam.
