About the Replacement Levy
Central Valley School District citizens will vote on a three-year School Programs and Operations Replacement Levy on the February 3 ballot. The levy renews the district’s current levy, which expires in December 2009. Voter approval of the current three-year levy provides about 19 percent of the district's day-to-day operating budget through local taxes and state levy equalization. It is not a new tax.
What does the levy pay for?
Nearly all educational programs in Central Valley schools are supported by levy funding, such as:
- School staff to maintain class sizes at current levels
- Learning support programs for struggling students
- Textbooks and teaching materials
- Special education programs
- Technology for classroom instruction and support
- Programs for academically advanced students
- Extracurricular activities such as music, drama, debate and athletics
- School bus transportation
What is the ballot language?
Voters will consider the Central Valley School District Replacement School Programs and Operation Levy ... "concerning a proposition to support school programs and operation expenses. This proposition would authorize the District to levy the following excess taxes, in place of an expiring levy, upon all taxable property within the District, for support of the District's General Fund school programs and operation expenses:
| Year |
Fixed Levy Amount |
Approximate Levy Rate/$1000 (Estimated) |
| 2010 |
$23,850,000 |
$3.27 |
| 2011 |
$25,500,000 |
$3.27 |
| 2012 |
$27,300,000 |
$3.27 |
What is the cost to taxpayers?
The 2010 proposed levy tax rate is $3.27 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. This means the owner of a $100,000 home would pay approximately $327 per year for the levy, a decrease from the $3.50 per $1,000 approved by voters in 2006. The total estimated school tax rate in 2010 of $4.75 per $1,000 includes the estimated bond rate of $1.48 per $1,000.
