Playground Cleanup Delayed Until 2007
A soil cleanup project at Progress Elementary originally scheduled to be completed in August 2006 will not begin until after students go home for the summer in June, funding permitting.
Agreement to postpone the work was reached with Department of Ecology officials after Superintendent Mike Pearson expressed concerns about the project timeline. Originally scheduled to begin in early August and be completed by September 7, it became apparent to District officials that the timeline was ambitious.
Due to the delay, Progress Elementary has been placed on the Department of Ecology’s “Hazardous Sites” list. Soil testing conducted by local and state public health officials shows elevated levels of lead and arsenic in the ground underneath the playfields at Progress Elementary.
Health officials are quick to note that there is no evidence that children have been adversely impacted. They also note that the sod and pea gravel currently covering the ground create an “effective, yet temporary barrier from exposure.” The chemicals in the soil date back to the site’s historical use as an orchard. Clean up costs are expected to be covered by the Department of Ecology.
