Backpack Reading: The first way students begin to learn to read is through being read to. When you read to your child you are modeling what readers do. (How they look, what they sound like and the simple love and enjoyment of books.) The more you read with your child the more you will help them in their journey to becoming a great reader. As you read there are ways to get your child involved in the book:
- Have them use their "detective" eyes to look for clues in the pictures.
- Ask them questions about what is taking place in the story.
- Have them hunt for a specific letter within the text. (ex) "Can you find a \Tt\ on this page?"
- Have them hunt for a "word in a snap" (sight word). "Can you find the word \the\ on this page?" "Do you see any words you know on this page?"
Reading A-Z Books: Now that your child is a reader, it is time for them to start taking on the roll of a reader. PLEASE have your child read their A-Z book to you each night. This helps them practice reading a book at their level. They are able to see themselves as a reader and use the "Fix-Up" stategies on words they don't know. The repetition of reading a book a couple nights in a row will help them with their fluency and building additional sight words that they know.
