Writer's Workshop - Expository

It amazes me how many wonderful learning opportunities are available to us in school.  The only problem is fitting all of these great learning experiences into the day.  One child will want to learn about the solar system, and another will want to learn about Babe Ruth, and another will want to learn about the history of Disneyland, and on and on.  All great learning ideas, but far too much content to fit in.

Introducing our class' version of Writer's Workshop - Expository! Now kids can learn about what they are interested in and we can all learn from them when they finish with a fantastic presentation.  The process is easy and a lot of fun.  First, kids select what they would like to learn about.  It can be a person, animal, event, place…absolutely anything that interests them.  Each child then fills out a Favorite Learning sheet to tell me what it is he/she wants to learn about.  They fill out two copies of the sheet.  I keep one and they keep one.

Second, they research the information they need to learn about the topic chosen.  (Yes, third graders can do “research”.  Awesome, huh?)  Since they already chose three main ideas on the sheet, it will be relatively easy to find the information on the internet, in the encyclopedia, or through some other source.

Next, they write that information down on note cards, a different note card for the introduction, conclusion, and each of the main ideas.

Once the note cards are finished they get to do artwork on the topic.  They have already chosen what type of art they would like to do on the original sheet they handed in when they chose the topic.

When the art work is finished they are ready to present to the class.  Now we all get to learn from them about their topic!

It is phenomenal to see all of the learning taking place at once when we are working on the projects in class. We will give notice to the parents as to when the favorite learning presentations will take place.  We would love to have you join us!
