WASL Tips

Parents often ask, "What can we do at home to prepare for the WASL?"

I'd like to share a few ideas...

* Read with your child and talk about what you read. Think aloud as you read. Talk about the characters, subjects, ideas, and language. Encourage your child to ask questions, make predictions, and make connections to his/her life.

* Ask your child to find the answer to a question in the text. Talk about providing evidence to support your answer.

* Read-Read-Read! Read stories, magazines, newspapers, editorials, phone books, movie listings, TV Guides, dictionaries, and thesauruses. All of these types of text support real-life learning.

* Write stories and esays with your child. The Writing WASL asks 4th grade students to write a narrative, a well-structured story and an expository piece explaining his/her reasons to support the topic.

* Turn every day events into mathematics story problems. WASL math is about demonstrating understanding, not just computation.
