Everyday Math

In my classroom, I strive to help kids find the real world connections with math as they live their everyday lives. In our classroom, math is really fun! Engagement in every activity is really important to me.

In first grade, we focus on many areas including, one-to-one correspondence, patterning, and using the hundreds grid to count, add, and subtract. We also dive into couting money, making change and we even do a whole unit on Geometry, including having the students identify characteristics of Polygons.

Our Everyday math program is fabulous because we have a spiraling curriculum, that allows the students to continually practice what they've learned throughout the year. This helps the students practice and eventually internalize the information, rather than forgetting it after each unit.

This year, as a building, Opportunity Elementary has decided to focus on computational fluency, allowing students to focus on basic math facts. In first grade, we expect students to add numbers +1, +2, and doubles in four minutes or less. Having the basic foundation of mathematics, and being able to perform and understand these operations quickly will help them in all areas of math and life, for years to come.
