21st Century Community Learning Grant"Success Academy" North Pines is one of five middle schools in Spokane County to be awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center consortium grant in partnership with Educational Service District (ESD) 101. The five-year, $50,000 per-year grant targets struggling students with intensive tutoring and focused assistance, primarily in mathematics. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade North Pines students will participate in the "Community Learning Center" which includes after-school academic homework completion programs and student enrichment activities such as educational and technology-based projects and recreational opportunities. The grant is designed to offer a range of high-quality educational, development and recreational services. Occasional weeknight activities and weekend functions will help keep students and parents engaged in the program. The grant will also fund summer programs which may serve incoming sixth graders. The grant will support all five middle schools in developing a well-coordinated, strategic effort to bring together community resources and develop organized partnerships to strengthen ties between the school, families and community. North Pines has already made strong gains in this area, establishing a business partnership with Horizon Credit Union nearly two years ago. Horizon Credit Union supports many activities at North Pines including "Student of the Month" and "Cub Pride" recognition programs. Credit Union representatives recently purchased and donated five digital cameras to the North Pines art department and will be displaying student work in their branch on Pines Road. North Pines staff is working closely with ESD 101 and school leaders from Chase, East Valley, Glover and Liberty middle schools to plan, implement and evaluate grant activities which will begin soon at the Central Valley school.
