Central Valley High Honors New Wall of Fame Inductees
September 14 Ceremony to Recognize Nine Individuals and One Team

Central Valley High School will welcome a new group of inductees to the school’s Wall of Fame during an evening ceremony on Friday, September 14.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a social in the school’s commons followed by the unveiling of the plaques at 6:00 p.m. The induction ceremony will take place at halftime during the football game with Mt. Spokane High School. The school is located at 821 S. Sullivan. Nine individuals and one team comprise the fourth class of Wall of Fame inductees, including:
· Bob Cox – Class of 1937, first ever state champion in any sport from CVHS
· Bob Keppel – Class of 1962; state high jump champion; King County detective
· Annette Hand – Class of 1983; collegiate, national and Olympic long-distance runner
· Sig T. Hansen – long-time teacher, coach and principal; football field bears his name
· Jon Lloyd – Class of 1974; three-sport athlete; district, regional and collegiate champ
· Ray Blowers – long-time teacher, coach and events manager
· George Chalich – Class of 1948; four-sport athlete; teacher and coach for 28 years
· Ed Stephan – Class of 1944; three-sport athlete; state javelin champion
· Dan Vickrey – Class of 1979; standout track athlete with records still holding.
· Members of the 1982 State Championship Girls Cross Country Team
Ten individuals and one team have previously been inducted into the CVHS Wall of Fame since the first ceremony in 2008. A selection committee of current and retired staff members and a community representative reviews submitted nominations and selects the next class of inductees. Nominations are accepted on an on-going basis.
Bob Cox
A 1937 graduate of Central Valley High School, Bob Cox was a two-sport athlete and the first ever state champion in any sport from CVHS. He won back-to-back state titles in the shot put in 1936 and 1937 with state record throws of 47’ 4.25” and 47’ 10”. His personal best shot put was 51’ 4.5”. Bob also competed in the broad jump, high jump and 100 yard dash. In addition, he was a starting fullback on the football team. Bob graduated from Washington State College, where he continued his shot put success winning the Northern Division Conference title in his sophomore year. He also ran the 100 yard dash in college clocking a best time of 9.9 against Idaho in his senior year.
Bob Keppel
A 1962 graduate of Central Valley High School, Bob Keppel was a two-sport athlete. Bob was the state high jump champion his senior year with a winning jump of 6’ 3”. He broke the Spokane City League high jump record that same year, going 6’ 5 1/2”. Bob was also a member of the 1962 basketball team that completed the regular season undefeated and placed sixth at state with a final record of 20-3. Bob was selected 1st Team All City and Honorable Mention All-State in basketball. Bob continued his track career after high school at Washington State University and just missed making the 1964 Olympic team. Bob became a detective in King County and participated in the investigations of the Green River and Ted Bundy cases.
Annette Hand
A member of the Class of 1983, Annette Hand was one of the nation’s premier long-distance runners staring in both cross country and track and field. Annette was a team leader for the 1982 Girls Cross Country State Championship Team and won an individual state championship in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:48.2 as a senior in 1983. She continues to hold the school records for the 1600 and 3200 meters. After graduation she continued to smash records at Montana State and University of Oregon. She was the NCAA 5000 meter champion in 1988 and named to the PAC 10’s All-Decade Team. She competed in the 1990 Goodwill Games and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Annette won three national championships, winning both the 1500 and 3000 meters in 1993.
Sig T. Hansen
A long-time teacher, coach and administrator at Central Valley High, Sig T. Hansen served ably in every position. He coached basketball and track and served as athletic director, but is best remembered as a football coach. Sig coached football for 21 seasons (1933-1953). He was instrumental in having lights installed at the football field in 1941, enabling CV to be the first high school in Spokane County to host night games. Sig served many years as CV’s principal and was very active in local community affairs including serving as president of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce in 1944-1945. His legacy continues at CVHS where the football teams still compete on the field named in his honor.
Jon Lloyd
A member of the Class of 1974, Jon Lloyd was a three-sport athlete excelling in football, track and wrestling. Jon earned All-League honors in football in both his junior and senior years. He was a district and regional champion in track as a junior and senior competing in the shot put and discus. Jon was also a district and regional champion as a senior in wrestling, compiling a 22-0 record with 19 pins. He was forced to withdraw from the state tournament as a senior with mononucleosis. Jon continued his wrestling career at North Idaho College where he posted a 61-9 record and placed 4th at Nationals his junior year. He then wrestled at Cal State – Long Beach winning the PCAA and NCAA West Regional Titles.
Ray Blowers
Ray Blowers taught and coached at Central Valley High for 33 years. Ray served as head baseball coach from 1965-1969 and head cross country coach from 1959-1961. He was an assistant softball coach and served as cheer advisor. Ray was the head of CV’s Business Department and as Business Manager supervised the student store among other duties. As Events Manager, he oversaw all home activities, monitoring ticket sales and concessions at athletic contests. If there was an activity at CV, Ray was there. He also served as a Union Representative for Central Valley Education Association.
George Chalich
A member of the Class of 1948, George Chalich was a four-sport athlete competing in football, basketball, track and baseball. He was selected 1st Team All-League in basketball as a sophomore, junior and senior. He led the league twice in scoring and broke the league scoring record his senior year with a 13.7 points per game average. He was a unanimous All-State selection his senior year and was nominated by the Inland Empire Sportswriters and Broadcasters. He continued his basketball career at the University of Washington and Gonzaga University. He taught and coached for 28 years and served as an official in both baseball and basketball for 40 years. In 1992, George Chalich was inducted into the Inland Empire basketball officials Hall of Fame.
Ed Stephan
A 1944 graduate of Central Valley High, Ed Stephen was a three-sport athlete earning varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Ed was the state javelin champion his senior year with a throw of 171’ 9” and was instrumental in the Bears placing 4th at state that year. He was a member of the basketball team that won the county and district championships and participated in the state tournament. Ed also performed in several drama productions while attending Central Valley High School.
Dan Vickrey
A 1979 graduate of Central Valley High School, Dan Vickrey was a standout track athlete competing in the hurdles. His school record of 13.8 in the high hurdles remains the fastest hand-held time in state history. He was named Athlete of the Meet at the Pasco Invitational Track Meet in 1979 and his 14.04 time in hurdles is the oldest record still standing in the history of that event. He was named Athlete of the Month by the Inland Empire Sportswriters and Broadcasters for the month of April 1979. He received a full-ride athletic scholarship to Washington State University and is still listed on the Washington State All-Time Prep Honor Roll. A track scholarship is awarded each spring to a Central Valley senior track athlete in his honor.
