First Graders to Receive Free Books

Opportunity Elementary Class Celebrates $400 'First Book' Grant

All 24 students in Mrs. Lancaster’s first grade class at Opportunity Elementary will receive free books during a special celebration tomorrow morning, April 29 at 10:30 a.m.  Opportunity Elementary is located at 1109 S. Wilbur in the Central Valley School District.

Every child in the classroom is expected to receive seven books of their own, thanks to a $400 grant from the First Book Spokane organization. Parents and family members are invited to help celebrate the ‘joy of reading’ tomorrow as the children select their new books.

“It is my belief that every child can learn,” explained classroom teacher Stephanie Lancaster, who applied for the grant several months ago. “With that said, I hope to provide my students with the resources they need to support that belief.”

First Book is a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. First Book has distributed more than 70 million free and low cost books in thousands of communities.

Opportunity Elementary is one 22 schools in the Central Valley School District serving about 440 students in grades K-5. For more information, call 228-5400 or click here.
