Sunrise Elementary's Sue McCollum Named Principal of the Year
Annual Award Presented by the Washington Library Media Association
10/29/2009
Sunrise Elementary principal Sue McCollum has been named Principal of the Year by the Washington Library Media Association (WLMA). Now in her 10th year as Sunrise Elementary principal, McCollum received the award earlier this month in Yakima.
McCollum was recognized for her ongoing support of her school’s library through staffing and building budget allocations which allow the library to serve the school’s 580 students and staff in a manner consistent with WLMA goals and standards. Her support contributed to the addition of the Accelerated Reader (AR) program five years ago and has encouraged the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to fund the extensive school-wide expansion of technology, benefiting the library and the adjacent computer lab.
“She is always encouraging and helpful, and publicly asserts her loyalty to the library program,” wrote nominators Donna Connell and Ann Weisbeck who are staff members in the Sunrise Elementary library. “She understands and promotes collaboration with classroom teachers, and it is apparent that she understands and values reading and reading promotion."
Sunrise Elementary is one of 22 schools in the Central Valley School District. Click here for more information.
