2008 Meritorious Service Awards

Each year, the outstanding contributions of Central Valley School District employees and community members are recognized by the Board of Directors through the Meritorious Service Awards. Initiated by the Board of Directors in 1985, these awards honor exemplary contributions by individuals and organizations toward student achievement and our district's primary focus -- learning and teaching.

All of this year's Meritorious Service nominees were recognized at special celebrations at each Central Valley School District building. The Board announced and presented district-wide Meritorious Service Awards in all four categories during the March 24, 2008 meeting of the Board. The recipients were selected by Board members from among the 87 individuals and 10 teams nominated this year by colleagues, students and parents.

2008 Meritorious Service Award Recipients: 

• Certificated Employee:  Karen Floyd, Central Valley High School - Karen has been instrumental in bringing about substantial improvements to the WASL scores in reading and writing at Central Valley High School, where she teaches Language Arts. The practice test and scoring rubric she developed have been used at both district high schools, and she readily shares her knowledge of best practices and strategies with her colleagues.
  
  
• Classified Employee:  Carolyn Nutsch, Central Valley High School - Positive, supportive, friendly, helpful, self confident, respectful and tactful are only a few of the ways that co-workers describe this Central Valley High School receptionist. In the front office, Carolyn has ensured that patrons receive fast, reliable and friendly service through a blend of an outstanding attitude and her commitment to professional development.
  
  
• Community Member/Organization: Liberty Lake Kiwanis, Greenacres Middle School - Through their volunteer activities and financial support, the Liberty Lake Kiwanis has enhanced the overall education of students of all grade levels across Central Valley School District. They have sponsored activities, classes and community services projects, and have provided items such as cameras, a cello, and $21,000 in scholarships to several schools. 
  
  
• Team: Broadway Elementary Homework Club - The Community of Christ Church opens its doors twice a week for an after-school program to improve students' reading and math skills and provide general homework help. Homework Club members include volunteers from the Community of Christ Church and three Broadway Elementary staff members - Jeanne Bailey, Judy Polley and Nick Schuerman. The three have devoted considerable time and energy to ensure the program's success. After six months of planning and three days of training, the 30+ volunteers from the Homework Club have helped the program's 37 students to improve their reading fluency, use of literacy strategies and math achievement.
