Homework Policy

Your student has homework tonight and almost every night in fifth Grade.  It is always due the next day, unless otherwise noted.  Please check each night to see that all pages are completed and a name is on each sheet.  When homework is not specifically assigned, there IS always Reading Counts, math facts practice, and Spelling words.  There is always homework! Please don’t ask “Do you have homework?” ask your student, “When will you be finished?”  Each student has one folder for “Homework”.  One side is labeled “Work to Do” and the other “Work Completed”. You can always find their homework in one of those two places.  These folders will travel home each night along with the Planner.  We call this

THE HOMEWORK HABIT!

“The Homework Habit” at the Fifth Grade level is as important for expanding curriculum as it is for developing responsibility in home-school communication.  Please encourage your child to take the initiative and be responsible for independently completing assignments whenever possible.  Your response will help your child build independence and self-confidence. Homework will, however, contain some activities which are intended to be done with adult supervision.  Because parents often want to help at home, but are reluctant to choose content, we are offering some homework projects to help you interact positively with your child.  The content may be an extension of our curriculum, or may be intended to connect school curriculum with the real world.  It does offer your child an opportunity to think and practice at his/her own pace, while interacting with their parents.

Learning to meet a deadline is an extremely important goal for all students at the Fifth Grade level.  For long term assignments, and there will be several, teachers have carefully chosen enough days or weeks to complete assignments.  Helping a student budget his/her time is one of the most important skills we teach.  Fifth Grade teachers also feel strongly that learning to be responsible is  critical for  educational success.  Therefore, students will earn credit only for work done completely  and on time.  A due date is always made clear with each homework task and meeting a deadline will strengthen student learning, responsibility, and progress.  Overall, students will realize growth in competency and organizational skills as they accept this challenge.

In an emergency if  there are assignments you are unable to complete please initial and return them or send a note.  While it doesn’t always excuse your child from homework, it let’s us know your child was responsible about the homework task.

Thank you for all you do to support your child.
