Health & Fitness

Grade Level: Middle School 6-8

The emphasis of health and fitness at the middle school is to develop the physical, emotional and social well-being of each student.  Students are taught the concepts and skills to maintain an active, healthy life.

The text used for instructional support for grade 6 students is Teen Health - Course 1, and the text for grades 7 and 8 is Health, A Guide to Wellness, both published by Glencoe/McGraw Hill.  These two texts support the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), as well as the National Association for Sport & Physical Education (NASPE) standards for health and fitness.  Both programs follow the concept of personal health as developed by the district.

Grade Level: High School 9-12

The emphasis of health and fitness at the high school level is one of "do and understand."  Students are taught health-related fitness concepts and then have the opportunity to put into practice those concepts.  The focus is on educating all students regardless of their ability from a health-related viewpoint.

The text used for instructional support are Human Kinetics: Physical Activity of Health & Fitness, and Physical Best, published by Human Kinetics.  The two adopted texts and fitness test support the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) for health and fitness, as well as the National Association for Sport & Physical Education (NASPE) standards for health and fitness.  Both programs follow the concept of personal health and fitness as adopted by the district.
