Wal-Mart Plastic Bag Recycling Program for Schools KID$ Recycling Challenge!

Our ASB, Associated Student Body, is taking Wal-Mart’s challenge.

Did you know?

• Nearly one trillion plastic shopping and grocery bags are used worldwide each year.
• Every year, billions of pounds of plastic grocery and shopping bags needlessly end up in landfills and as litter.

Clean up the environment and earn cash for your school.

To help reduce the environmental impact that plastic bags create, Wal-Mart is once again partnering with select K-6 elementary schools on a plastic bag recycling program that will teach students about the importance of recycling while they earn money for their schools.

This challenge runs from September 1, 2006 to March 30, 2007. Through this innovative program:

• Participating schools receive collection bins and a supply of 60 gallon collection bags.
• Schools earn $5.00 cash for every collection bag they fill with plastic shopping and grocery bags and bring to their local Wal-Mart store for recycling.
• Participating schools are grouped into several geographic regions. The top ten schools in each region that bring in the most collection bags by the end of the program will receive additional cash grants from Wal-Mart in the amounts of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,000 for third place, and $250 for fourth through tenth places.

As an added incentive, the students of the first-place school in each region will also be rewarded with an entertaining school-wide assembly, courtesy of Wal-Mart.

Participating schools have already removed nearly 360 tons of plastic bags from the waste stream, and have earned over $328,000 in the process!

You can help.

Please send your plastic bags to school and have your child put them in the recycling bins which are located in our lobby.

** Please keep your bags over the summer and send them to school in September. **

Thank you for your assistance,
