Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a very motivating computerized reading program that matches readers to books at their correct reading level.  It is an important part of the reading program provided at Greenacres Elementary and it nicely supplements our Language Arts Curriculum.  It is a program that utilizes individual books (usually from the library) and helps to make students accountable for what they read independently.

Students first take a computerized reading assessment called Star Student.  After completing the test, the student is assigned a level, which corresponds to a color.  Books in the library are labeled according to these colors and levels.  Students will be most successful in reading at their color level.  You can check out the list of books for which we have quizzes at our school website:

 Student Role:

1.       Students select their own books at their own level.

2.      Students read at their own pace while working to meet their monthly goal.  The monthly goal for second grade is 3 points.

3.     Students may read books for the Accelerated Reader Program at home and at school.

4.      Students take short quizzes on the computer to verify comprehension of each book they read.  They receive points if they pass the quiz.

 Test Taking Tips:

1.     Read the whole book.

2.     Read each test question carefully before selecting an answer.

3.     If you don’t pass the test, it is possible to reread the book and try the test a second time.

4.     Once a test has been passed it is not possible to retake that test.
