Mrs. Heffernan
6th Grade Language Arts

It's April, and that means WASL time!  All year, students have been learning reading skills and strategies that will help them be successful not only on the WASL, but also for years to come.

Please help your son/daughter be physically and mentally ready for this important assessment:

  • Get a fair amount of sleep at night
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Drink a lot of water
  • Exercise regularly outside (it is spring!)

Novel Study: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

All 6th grade students in our district will be reading this book this year.  I am choosing to reinforce and dig deeper into the reading strategies I have taught this year as we read this book.

1.  Background Knowledge

2.  Questioning the Text

3.  Drawing Inferences

4. Determining Importance

5.  Creating Mental Images

6.  Monitor Comprehension

7.  Summarize and Synthesize Information

Ask your son or daughter regularly about these strategies!
