Rational Numbers - Vocabulary

benchmark A "nice" number that can be used to estimate the size of other numbers.
          0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1     or      0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0
decimal A special form of a fraction where the denominator is 10, 100, 1000 and so on.
denominator The number below the bar in a fraction which tells how many equal parts are in the whole.
equivalent fractions Fractions that are equal in value but have different numerators and denominators.
fraction A number which indicates a part of a whole written in the form of a/b.
improper
fraction
A fraction in which the numerator is larger than or equal to the denominator.
lowest terms
or reduced
A fraction in which the numerator and the denominator have no common factors.
mixed numbers A number that has a whole number part and a fraction.
numerator The number above the bar in a fraction which represents how many parts of the whole you are using.
percent A special fraction/decimal which represents how many out of 100.
ratio The comparison of two quantities written in the form of
a/b, a:b, or a to b.

 

Whole Numbers - Vocabulary

Composite
Number
A whole number that has more than two factors.
Divisible A whole number is divisible by another whole number if the remainder is zero when you divide.
Even
Number
A whole number that is not divisible by two.
Exponent A numeral written above and to the right of another numeral to indicate how many times the original number is multiplied.
Factor One of two or more whole numbers that are multiplied to obtain a product.
GCF
greatest common factor
The largest factor that two or more numbers have in common.
LCM
least common multiple
The smallest number that is a multiiple of two or more numbers.
Multiple The product of a given whole number and another whole number.
Odd
Number
A whole number that is divisible by two.
Prime
Factorization
The expression of a number as a product of prime factors.
Prime

A whole number greater than one whose only factors are one and itself.
Square
Number
The product of a whole number multiplied by itself.

Difference The answer in a subtraction problem.

Evaluate To examine and judge carefully.
Place Value The value of a digit as determined by its place in a number.
Product The answer in a multiplication problem.
Quotient The answer in a division problem.
Round To replace a number with a near number that is easier to work with.
Simplify To rewrite a number or expression in its simplest form.
