Language Arts

Parents and students, check this page weekly for information and updates.

Week of September 24-28 we are continuing our story "Eleven," from the new EMC language arts curriculum. Please chat with your child and ask them to share their views about this story with you soon. We are also studying nouns, and students are learning to differentiate between common and proper nouns, and concrete and abstract nouns.

Also this week we completed our first Jane Schaffer writing assignment. This is a brand new writing curriculum, recently adopted by the Central Valley School District. Please ask your student about the lessons using the different colored pens. These pens are used in conjunction with learning about topic sentences, concrete details, commentary and conclusion sentences.

Vocabulary development is practiced on a weekly basis and this week we practiced Word Trees and Concept Maps. These are new graphic organizers built either as a class or in small groups, or even individually to promote vocabulary enhancement.

Cursive Writing

Cursive writing is a 6th-grade expectation. We have been through the alphabet, and cursive writing is now required for all language arts assignments. If your child is struggling with cursive writing please help your child by having them practice cursive writing at home on a daily basis.
