| Fire Camp was established on the ground of Horizon Middle School during the Dishman Hills Fire of mid-July. |
On the evening of Thursday, July 10, a fast-moving brush fire quickly covered the Dishman Hills area in smoke and flame. By the evening, many of the more than 200 evacuated local residents found refuge and support at University High School, where the American Red Cross had opened a shelter. One-hundred and thirty-six people are reported to have stayed overnight at the school. At nearby Horizon Middle School, more than 500 firefighters and law enforcement personnel established their fire camp, a base for operations and a "tent city" for fire fighters to rest and recharge.
Central Valley staff at both buildings did not hesitate to support the fire and emergency management efforts in any way possible. The district and the school staff have been lauded by many of the fire fighting efforts participants for their tireless efforts to make the displaced residents and fire and police personnel comfortable. The Red Cross commented, “the custodians at University High made the evacuee’s stay as stress-free as possible and also made our time here easy…thanks to them!”
The fire eventually burned 1,200 acres and 11 structures in the Dishman Hills area before it was extinguished on Sunday, July 20.
