Horizon Middle School Students’ Award-Winning PSA to Air on Local Television

A 30-second public service announcement (PSA) produced by Horizon Middle School drama students was named “Best in Show” in an annual media competition sponsored by the Teens Against Substance Abuse Campaign (TASC). The Horizon project beat out more than 500 submissions across several media categories to win the honor, and was also named “best television spot.” Twelve eighth grade students planned, wrote, filmed and produced the anti-drug PSA, with local assistance from Percy’s Café Americana and ILF Media.

Middle schools across the greater Spokane area were invited to produce a drug-free message for their peers in their choice of media, including print ads, radio spots, television spots and billboards. A panel of judges selected the winning entries.
The students of Sara Filanoski's drama class were awarded "Best in Show" honors for their drug-free PSA.

In order to produce the PSA, the Horizon Mi ddle School students in teacher Sara Filanoski’s drama class made storyboards and action sheets, designed props and costumes and spent a Saturday during spring break filming at Percy’s Café Americana in the Spokane Valley. ILF Media in Spokane helped the students with blocking, filming and editing. The award-winning eighth grade students are Kevin Abercrombie, Alexander Bieker, Lexi Clark, Jeshua Defilippis, Fernando Duran-Vargas, Victoria Gatts, Devon Jensen, Robert Marshall, John Morris, Cojo Smith, Caleb Spencer and Jordan Ziemer.

As the winning entry, the students’ PSA will air on KREM-2 television and Clear Channel stations through the end of 2008. The students were also rewarded with cash and prizes at the awards ceremony, held at Spokane Falls Community College on May 6.
