Two employees of Central Valley High School have been awarded 2008 Central Valley School District Meritorious Service Awards. Karen Floyd received the certificated employee award, and Carolyn Nutsch received the classified employee award.
Floyd has been instrumental in bringing about substantial improvements to the WASL scores in reading and writing at Central Valley High School, where she teaches Language Arts. She developed a practice test and scoring rubric to help students and teachers to learn more about good testing strategies. She has also served as a WASL test scorer. Scores have improved at both Central Valley High School and University High where the test has been used. Over the past three years, Central Valley High School students have scored 7.9% higher in reading and 14.4% in writing. She readily shares her knowledge of best practices and strategies with her colleagues, thereby promoting collaboration among staff.
Nutsch, Central Valley High School's front desk receptionist, is described by her co-workers as positive, supportive, friendly, helpful, self confident, respectful and tactful. In the front office, she has ensured that patrons receive fast, reliable and friendly service through a blend of an outstanding attitude and her commitment to professional development. Since Nutsch joined the staff, negaitve comments about the climate in the front office have virtually disappeared, and administrators often hear compliments about the way she performs her job.
Floyd was selected from among 39 certificated nominees, and Nutsch was chosen from 27 classified nominees to earn this honor. Their selection for the awards was announced at the March 24 meeting of the Board of Directors.
