Central Valley Students Excel as Spokane Scholars

Five Central Valley School District high school seniors recently received grants for their remarkable academic achievements from the Spokane Scholars Foundation. The students were honored by hundreds of attendees at the annual awards banquet on April 26 at the Spokane Convention Center.

Now in its 15th year, the Spokane Scholars Foundation honors the top students from each of Spokane County's high schools in six academic areas:  English, World Languages, Fine Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. These students are nominated by their high school teachers and counselors. The top four students honored in each category are chosen for their grades, national test scores, letters of recommendation, awards and honors, as well as overall grade point average.

Central Valley students excelled in five of the six categories:

Social Studies
2nd place – Nathan J. Damiano – Central Valley High School
4th place – Leslie A. Berkseth – University High School

English
2nd place – Nathan J. Damiano – Central Valley High School

Fine Arts
3rd place – Laura A. Murphy – Central Valley High School

World Languages
3rd Place – Amy B. Wang – Central Valley High School

Science
2nd Place – Suzanne K. Miller – Central Valley High School

The top students in each category received cash grants toward their college education, with $4,000 awarded to the first place winner. The student selected for second place received $3,000, the third place recipient received $2,000, and the fourth place student received $1,000. Each student was also given a personalized commemorative Spokane Scholars Foundation medallion. Additionally, six area colleges and universities offer matching grants to Spokane Scholars who attend their schools.

Since 1991, Spokane Scholars has been dedicated to recognizing the value of learning, by leading the way for the Spokane community to publicly praise the academic accomplishments of its high school students. The Spokane Scholars Foundation was created by a group of Spokane professional and business people who wanted to create a special recognition for academic excellence by Spokane County high school seniors. The grants are made possible through the generous financial  contributions of Spokane businesses and individuals.
