CVHS Marching Band Crowned Festival of Bands Champions
The Central Valley High School Marching Band (CVMB) competed and won the 33rd Annual University of Oregon Festival of Bands this weekend in the amazing Autzen Stadium. Central Valley students brought their best and represented CVHS along with 22 schools from all along the I–5 corridor from Los Angeles to Vancouver. CVMB was recognized as the best band in OPEN (most competitive) class during the preliminary round as well as "Best Visual" and "Best General Effect." The final performance was outstanding and the band was recognized again as the "Champions" with the highest score a 90.7 – the first band to break 90 this year in the Northwest Association of Performing Arts circuit. CVMB also took home "Best Visual" and "Best General Effect" for the Finals round.
According to CVHS Director of Bands Eric Parker, the best moment of the night was the look of bewilderment on every Bear as they were crowned champions! In the 33 years of this competition, this is the first win for an Eastern Washington band. "The students had no expectations – just an opportunity," said Parker. "Our kids didn’t pump their fist, scream or anything, but smile and put their arms around the shoulder of their neighbor. The audience of thousands of high school band and colorguard students stood up and gave our kids a standing ovation for their class and humility in the win."
CVMB competes in their final performance October 29 in Hillsboro, Oregon against many of the same bands for the Northwest Association of Performing Arts Marching Band Championship. All are invited to attend and enjoy watching the leadership and commitment of the performers. Come see why Mr. Parker proudly exclaims, "they are simply the best!"
