Chase Youth Awards Honor Central Valley High Schools
Three Central Valley student groups and one individual student were honored with 2011 High School Chase Youth Awards during this year’s celebration on March 13 at the Fox Theatre in downtown Spokane. Barker High School’s Key Club was recognized with a Community Involvement Award and Barker senior Amanda Rehfeldt was honored with a Personal Achievement Award. Central Valley High School student Cassie Kaplan joined University High School student Marcy Prothero as recipients of the Spirit of Jim Chase Award for their work on the "Malaria Project", selling bracelets to purchase sleeping nets for children exposed to malaria. Class of 2010 University High School students Courtney Ramsey and Sadie Perry received a Leadership Award for their work in creating a Body Image DVD and lesson plan for middle and high schools. Hundreds of Spokane-area children and youth were nominated for 29 awards this year. Named for former Spokane Mayor Jim Chase, the annual ceremony spotlights the best and brightest young people in the region and honors their creativity, diversity, courage, leadership, community service and citizenship.
