Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at Evergreen Middle School “Where Good Things Happen!”
Again this year, the Principal’s Grizzly e-mail will be my primary means of communicating with parents on a weekly basis. Our teachers also rely on e-mail as a way of communicating between school and home. Please make sure that we have your current e-mail address as part of your child’s demographic information so that we can keep you informed throughout the school year. On the first day of school, each student will be bringing home a printed copy of their demographic information for parents to review and update. We are asking that students return the updated information sheet by Friday, September 7th.
The Central Valley School District is in the transition of updating our computer information systems by implementing eSchool. Parents no longer have access to the old SIS Web information as we make this transition. In the past, students and parents anxiously checked for student schedules to be posted prior to the first day of school on SIS Web. For this year only, parents will not have access to their student’s information prior to school starting. I anticipate that we will be providing parents with information on how to access the “new” system within the first few weeks of school. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we implement a system that will provide more information about your child’s progress on a regular basis.
On the first day that our office was opened, we enrolled 21 new students, and we continue enrolling new students each day. Again this year, Evergreen Middle School will be serving overflow students from Greenacres Middle School. With our current enrollment (650) and anticipated continual growth, Evergreen Middle School is currently closed to accepting “choice” students. In the past, we’ve allowed students to change their exploratory classes if there was room available. Unfortunately, almost all of our classes are full, and our ability to make student schedule changes will be almost non-existent. Our counselor, Ms. Naccarato, is available to answer scheduling questions from parents and students beginning August 30th.
Our annual Sneak Peek for sixth graders will be held on Thursday, August 30th, from 8:45 AM to Noon. Sneak Peek gives our 6th graders an opportunity to learn about Evergreen, get their schedule, meet their teachers, gather textbooks, meet their 8th grade mentor, and be assigned a locker before the first day of school. They will also go through a “shortened” school day.
The First Day of School for all students will be on Wednesday, September 5th beginning at 8:10 AM and ending daily at 2:40 PM. Student immunization records are required by state law before a student can attend the first day of school. On the first day, students will be given a packet of information and forms that need to be completed and returned to school by no later than Friday, September 7th. Each student will also receive a Planner that contains the Evergreen Middle School student handbook. This handbook outlines our expectations of students and answers most questions about our school. As part of our school improvement plan, all students will be expected to record their assignments in their planner on a daily basis. Planners are a great way to help teach students organizational skills while taking responsibility for their learning.
Each Thursday, beginning on September 6th, school will begin at 9:10 AM for the purpose of staff collaboration. During collaboration, the staff will be analyzing data to evaluate student achievement as a means of improving instructional practices, developing curriculum, and meeting individual student challenges. We will also be implementing and monitoring our school improvement plan during this time.
As a middle school staff, we are committed to meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of our adolescent students. We continue to “take care of kids” as we prepare them for high school and beyond. We work hard to personalize student learning which makes Evergreen a truly unique school. On behalf of the staff, we look forward to serving the students, parents, and community at Evergreen Middle School, “Where Good Things Happen!”
