Preparing for H1N1 Flu

Central Valley is getting ready for an active influenza season with cases of H1N1 flu (formerly called ‘swine’ flu) and seasonal flu expected in our schools over the coming weeks and months.

At the district level, we are working closely with local public health officials and are reviewing and adjusting our pandemic influenza plan for H1N1 flu. Here in our school, we are reminding our students to stay healthy by washing their hands often and covering their coughs and sneezes with a sleeve or tissue. Our school employees are alert for students with any flu-like symptoms and are acting quickly to send ill students home. Flu-like symptoms include fever (100°F or higher), cough, sneezing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, tiredness or extreme exhaustion.

There is much that parents can do to help prevent the spread of influenza and other viruses in our school. Most importantly, parents are asked to keep sick children at home until completely well. When reporting student absences, providing details about the child’s symptoms is very helpful. And, parents can continue to reinforce proper hand washing and hygiene techniques with their children throughout the year.
