  Syllabus

Welcome to my classroom.  This is my third year at Evergreen Middle School, and I am looking forward to a great year.  We have many things that we are going to learn in this class, so we are all going to have to work together so that we may be successful in all that we do.  In my classroom, I have some rules and expectations that will help us all to achieve success.

Materials:

  • Textbooks
  • Writing utensil (blue or black pen, or pencil)
  • Spiral notebook for Journal/Entry-Task
  • Three-holed notebook paper for other assignments
  • Daily planner (provided by the school)
  • All materials are to be brought to class every day

Attendance:

  • Students are expected to be in their seats at the bell
  • 3 tardies receives an office referral
  • You will be allowed to leave the classroom 4 times during the trimester (bathroom, drink, locker, etc…)
  • If you are absent, you need to check with 3 other students for missed work before checking with me

Homework:

  • All homework is due the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise stated
  • Late assignments will be accepted, minus 10% for each day late
  • If you are absent, you will be allowed 2 days, from the day you return, to hand in missed assignments
  • All homework is to be turned in on three-holed notebook paper (not out of spiral notebook)
  • All work is to be completed in blue or black pen, or pencil
  • If a student has 2 or more missing assignments, they will be assigned Griz Club*

Grading:

The areas in which grades will be calculated are:

  • Tests/Quizzes
  • Homework
  • Journal/ Daily planner
  • Classwork

Detailed explanation of grading can be found at http://www.cvsd.org/documents/grading_policy.pdf

Extra Credit:

There will be various opportunities for extra credit throughout the year.  Students will be given 4 passes per trimester to leave the classroom.  Passes not used will be accepted for extra credit points at the end of each trimester.

Test/Quiz make-up:

Due to the format of our curriculum, missing another day of instruction to make-up a test or quiz would cause a student to become further behind.  Thus, if you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you are expected to make it up either before or after school within 2 days of returning to class.

Extra Help:

I will be available for extra help most Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at approximately 7:30am.  If mornings aren’t a possibility, afternoon times can be arranged.

I try to update my grade book by the end of each week.  If you ever want a progress report, just have your child ask, or send me an e-mail.  I will print one off.  I can also e-mail it to you if that is your preferred means of communication.  Each student should also be keeping an agenda that you could look at anytime, to see what assignments have been given.  My website will be available on the school site in a couple of weeks.  I will also try to make assignments available there.

I look forward to a fun, challenging, and successful year.  Parental support and collaboration are a key part of what we do at Evergreen Middle School.  I encourage you to keep in contact, so that we may help your student to grow and learn together.  I know that we all lead busy lives, and communication can be difficult at times.  There are a couple of ways to contact me: E-mail jarmstrong@cvsd.org, or Voice Mail 228-4827.  Feel free to call me or send me a message anytime.  I will do my best to reply as promptly as possible. If it is an emergency, you can call the office and have them get a hold of me.
