PARENT INFORMATION

Dear Parents,

         Welcome to class with Mr. Cox! I would like to let you know what to expect. My main emphasis is for your child to LEARN HOW TO LEARN, which is the reason he/she is in school. What you learn is not as important as how you learned it! To that end, we will be working with study skills and use Science as the vehicle on which to practice. The main things I stress are -

   A. Anytime you get important information - WRITE IT DOWN.

   B.Use the Scientific Method - 1. INVESTIGATE - using all of your senses and asking questions to gain information. 2. HYPOTHESIS - educated guess based on information from step #1 3. EXPERIMENT - testing your hypothesis.(any test or quiz, homework, assignment etc. are in this step) 4. DATA - results of your experiment. (if bad - rewrite your hypothesis if good - go to step #5) 5. CONCLUSION - continue to do until proven wrong.

   C. Use the three step study method -

      1. Take notes

      2. Refine notes- make better by looking, listening and asking questions in class

      3. Review notes nightly

 D. Follow the rules for writing -

      1. Write everything you know on the subject.

      2. Explain everthing thoroughly (Don't assume the reader has your knowledge)
