Description: The above mentioned book will read and discussed. The authors of this book have examined decades of research, interviewed mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms, and reviewed the classroom recommendations from Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock's Classroom Instruction That Works (2001) through an ELL lens. The strategies discussed in the book include homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations, among many others. Books will be provided.

vBook Study: Making Sense: Small-Group Comprehension Lessons for English Language Learners by J. Kendall and O. Khuon
Audience: K-8
Description: The above mentioned book will be read and discussed. Its five main sections are geared to the stages of language proficiency, and lessons are divided into “younger” and “older” students, spanning K through grade 8. The authors outline fifty-two lessons that teach students how to make connections, ask questions, visualize (make mental images), infer, determine importance, and synthesize (inspired by the work of Debbie Miller, Stephanie Harvey, Anne Goudvis, and Cris Tovani). In addition to group discussions, participants will be required to complete a homework assignment to try some strategies in their classrooms. Books will be provided.

vBook Study: Writing Sense: Integrated Reading and Writing Lessons for English Language Learners by J. Kendall and O. Khuon
Audience: K-8
Description: The above mentioned book will be read and discussed. It outlines the classroom conditions necessary for successful writing instruction with ELLs, whether in writing workshop and/or small-group instruction. The authors experimented with Ellin Keene’s “Thinking Strategies Used by Proficient Learners” and found that by integrating writing and reading instruction ELLs become stronger writers. This easy-to-use resource offers a wealth of practical strategies to integrate reading and writing and to help students grow into proficient writers as they are learning English. In addition to group discussions, participants will be required to complete a homework assignment to try some strategies in their classrooms. Books will be provided.

vResearch-based Strategies for English Language Learners!!!
Audience: K-8
Description: The 2008 goal of the State of Washington Professional Educator Standards Board is that “All teachers will be effective with English Language Learners.” All teachers must be able to provide effective instruction to English language learners. The PESB plans to integrate these knowledge and skills into educator standards. In this class we will address issues of acculturation and stages of language acquisition with best practice teaching strategies for each stage. Effective strategies for teaching reading, writing, and content subjects will be shared and discussed. Whether you have English Language Learners in your classroom for the first time or you have had previous experience and would like to get more research-based classroom strategies, this is a great class. Participants who complete the 2-part class will receive a FREE copy of the book Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learners by Jane D. Hill and Kathleen M. Flynn.
