Curriculum & Instruction

Curriculum and instruction in Central Valley School District are based on Washington State’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs). The EALRs are Washington State’s standards for learning and teaching, and broadly explain what students should know and be able to do in eight core academic content areas: Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Science, Communications, Social Studies, Art, and Health and Fitness. These are foundations created from a law created in 1993 with the intent to "provide opportunities for students to become responsible citizens, contribute to their own economic well-being and to their families and communities, and enjoy productive and satisfying lives.” Click here for a (pdf) summary of the reform act and Washington’s four learning goals.

Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) narrow the focus of each Essential Academic Learning Requirement to describe the specific knowledge and skills student should acquire in each grade, from kindergarten through high school. To view the EALRs and GLEs by grade level instead of by content area, click here.

K-12 Classes

  • Grades K-8: Central Valley schools have adopted “Curriculum Frameworks” summaries of what is taught at each grade level from kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • Grades 9-12: Central Valley high schools are developing descriptions and outlines for each course to establish consistency and clearly define student learning objectives. Visit the Barker, Central Valley or University High School website to learn more about particular courses.

Instructional Content
The Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) set clear targets for student learning. While many may stand alone as specific standards, they require integration as students need to be able to see patterns and relationships between facts and ideas and use facts as tools for understanding and organizing concepts and principles.
